Service light reset for your BMW F800GS
Here is how to reset the service light on your BMW F800GS.
Let’s reset the service light and the service intervals of your BMW F800GS or whatever other compatible BMW motorcycle you own.
The first step is obviously going to either the Appstore or Google play to download the “Motoscan” app, after installing the app is time to get the parts needed to have your BMW F800GS be able to communicate with your phone.
The only parts you need are a conversion cable to turn the BMW diagnostic port into OBD2 and the gizmo that turns the information from the OBD2 port into Bluetooth to send to your phone and back. OHP 10-pin OBD Adapter for BMW Motorcycles and OBDLink LX Bluetooth: Professional OBD-II Scan Tool for Android & Windows
Now you have everything you need to do the reset yourself and be able to reed and reset trouble codes, see live parameters from the bike, check the anti-lock brake system and many other options, but enough with the chit chat it is time to get our hands dirty and reset that service light.
Start by removing the seat and locating the diagnostic plug. The diagnostic plug is round, about 1 inch across and is located under the seat, forward towards the fuel tank. Pull it off the retaining clip and remove the cap to uncover the 10 pin plug.
It’s time now to plug in the adapter cable and plug the OBDlink LX into it, the power icon on the OBDlink LX will illuminate green and the Bluetooth icon will start blinking blue, now turn the ignition on but do not start the bike.
Get your phone and let’s connect it to the Bluetooth device, open your phone Bluetooth setting page and search for new devices and push and release the scan button on the OBDlink LX device, which is pretty much the only button on the device, at this point “OBDlink LX” should appear among the paired devices, when the “Bluetooth pairing request” message appears on your phone just push “OK”. The OBDlink LX is now paired with your phone, but you are not quite done yet, open the Motoscan app, go to settings, Communication, and select for communication type “Bluetooth” and under Bluetooth device select “OBDlink LX”. You are now all connected and ready to go.
Go back to the app intro window and do as follow:
F Series – K72 (F650GS, F800GS) – Instrument cluster (KOMBI)- a message will appear in green (Connected to diagnostic interface) – Service Reset.
You are now on the “Service Reset” page, on this page you will be able to see all the service information of your bike, actual milage of your bike, date, next service milage and date.
You can now set the current date, and reset the service reminder to whatever milage and date you want. EVEN IF THE APP SAYS “MILAGE” EVERYWHERE, THE NUMBERS ARE ACTUALLY IN “KILOMETERS KM” hence 6,000 miles is actually 10,000 KM, 12,000 miles = 20’000 KM and so on.
After you have set all the parameters to whatever you like, push all 3 “RESET”, one at the time obviously and you will see a message saying “reset ok” and the current service information changed to the new parameters. You might notice the the service light is still illuminated on the F800GS instrument cluster, that is because you are not done yet, you have reset the service intervals, let’s now reset the service light.
Go back to the “Instrument Cluster (KOMBI)” page, as you can see at the bottom of the page there is a “Coding” option, click on “Coding” and the next page contains a few more information about your bike like, consumption unit, Mpg USA or Kpl EUROPE, fuel quantity unit, clock mode, temperature unit etc. etc. Make sure everything looks right, I didn’t change anything, and finally push “PERFORM CODING”.
The F800GS instrument cluster will go off and come back on, the gauges will perform a self test swiping full scale, just like when you turn on the ignition and the SERVICE LIGHT will be gone, CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE DONE!!!!
Turn off the bike, unplug the OBDlink LX, unplug the adapter cable, put the cap back on the diagnostic plug, secure the diagnostic plug in place, reinstall the seat and go enjoy your BMW F800GS.
THE DIAGNOSTIC PLUG ON THE NEWER MODELS MIGHT BE IN OBD2 FORMAT ALREADY, THAT MEANS, NO NEED FOR AN ADAPTER CABLE.
